I remember hearing from someone that happiness can’t be defined, found, or measured. There was a time in my life, not long after my mother died, when the colors of the world around me had been sapped and my dreams of a better life faded to black—I believed it. Years of anger, hate, and pain toward my father—toward life in general, there were many times I’d thought about ending it all.

At sixteen, a razor blade and two, deep slices to my wrists would’ve done the job—briefly painful, slow death, but most effective.
At nineteen—when I couldn’t stomach looking at the murderous monster staring back at me in the mirror—I found the barrel of a 9mm inside my mouth, safety off, and finger on the trigger. It would’ve been messy, but the quickest way to leave the life I’d been dealt...

But one day, I walked into a gym and I saw a girl who brightened my world with more colors than I knew existed. I saw a girl who was hurting like I’d hurt. I saw a girl who made me want to tell her my life story. I saw a girl who—the more we talked—looked at me like I was her hero, and not the gambler’s killer son.
That day, several years ago, I found it… happiness… Madisyn.
